Treatment of children with HCV

Treatment of children with hepatitis c

Response rates to treatment in children are of a similar magnitude, and show the same influences of genotype, to adults.59 Combination treatment with interferon (IFN) and ribavirin gives an overall SVR of 50-60%.59-62 Data on the use of pegylated interferon, as opposed to standard interferon, and on optimal dosage and adverse sequelae in children are limited. There is a potential for effects on thyroid function and growth problems.61, 62 3

Children with evidence of moderate or severe liver disease should be considered for treatment with pegylated IFN and ribavirin.
